super storm sandy, she is here, blamed for two deaths in the state of maryland, a lot of places up and down the east coast, are a mess on this tuesday morning. thank you for joining us. we went on early for you today. >> i'm megan pringle. >> i'm charley crowson. team coverage throughout the day for you here in the aftermath of hurricane now super storm sandy, on the right, you see a life shot, hamdon, beneath the jfx, baltimore cities we will have a live report from sherrie johnson and on the left, new york city, moments ago, president barack obama has announced a disaster area

declaration for new york and long island. >> we will cover both of those communities. what are we in store for today? the worst -- >> woe, woe. >> we got rains we got lots of rain yesterday, we are going to get lots of rain today. we will see some of that today as well. i can't say the wore is over. all i can say is sandy made landfall. it could stall out for a bit and begin to move off towards the north. todays we are going to see hefty winds and alplenty of rain. we can see that behind me as we look at mailed's most powerful radar, the heavy rain along i-9 a, i-270, you don't need to travel today. keep it on the indoors and make sure the roads are clean and cheer as we check out what is going on with the winds, the

current winds, similar to yesterday. sustained winds at 20 miles an hour, 18 miles an hour, 6 halvety grace. we are gusting higher than that. we are talking about wind gusts, tropical storm force again that will continue throughout the day. 36. below tropical storm force. that's very gusty. for a wind gust this morning. that will continue through the afternoon. yesterday, look what we had in atlantic city, 77 miles an hour, peak wind gusts. this is a hurricane forced gust that came yesterday. once again today sit going to be on the gusty side. now a check of the time saver traffic with loren cook. those winds probably going to knock out more trees, and unfortunately cause more power problems. arundel county, we are dealing with flooding that's shutdown route 176, at baltimore

annapolis boulevard. problems persist in baltimore city where there is flooding on falls road that shut it down at lake avenue. more problems to report underneath the jfx. baltimore, we are dealing with more storm damage on park heights, hooks lane, as we look at the beltway now, 695, liberty road, traffic along, if you can, stay at home today. the roads are going to be slick. extremely treacherous. this is downtown at 395, the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour, definitely keep that in mind if you have to go out. reminder, all mta service has been suspended. in case you are waking up with us, we are following breaking news, many homeowners worry about, especially during severe weather. >> a tree crashing down on a house. it is the second storm related death in the state. linda so joins us life with more. >> reporter: police are waiting

to make a positive identification on the victim. we are told he is a man in his 70s. we are live outside of police headquarters, employees give us new information. video we shot overnight for you in the 7700 block of stewet drive in pasadena, near fort smallwood road. this are mature older trees in the area. before 11:00 last night, when the winds were blowing, the rain was coming down hard, a tree snapped, fell on the man's house, cut through left side of his house. you can see it split the trunk and fell on the man who was in his kitchen. police aren't sure if he was cooking at the time. it killed him, trapped him inside. press are waiting to remove the body. they have to use a heavy crane, they are waiting to bring that in so they can remove the tree

because it's so big and take the map's body to the medical examiner's office. he was home alone, he does have an adult son who stays with him. he was not inside the home at the time. once police remove the tree and can get access to the body they will make a positive identification, notify family members, and his body will be taken to the medical examiner's office. linda so, abc2 news. >> another storm related death in our state, authorities say a woman was killed when her car skidded on a wet road, this happened in montgomery county. police have not ruled out other factors yet. big problem in some areas, dealing with this morning, flooding, team coverage continues in hamden right now. >> sherrie johnson is live. you can hear the flood waters. you are beneath the jfx. >> that is right, we are in hemdon, union avenue. this water is fast moving here,

you can hear it. it is loud here and basically this is the jones falls, we are under the jfx. this water is basically overflowing the banks and running in to the parking lot area of some nearby businesses here in the clipper mill area. this area is no stranger to flooding. this area seen flooding for businesses and homes, they have experienced problems. the department of transportation has closed several roads and intersections because of the flooding. this includes clipper mill at meadows mills where we are standing here. mayor stephanie rawlings blake request, police officers and emergency responders are also out on the streets this morning, to respond to problems we have seen them, they have been through here several times patrolling, making sure everyone is safe. the city received calls for downed trees and power lines and flooding and yesterday the mayor i a announced a travel restriction for roadways.

this restriction began last night at 6:00, and runs until noon today. the restriction doesn't include a uniform personnel, employees and medical providers. baltimore city opened 6 shelters throughout the city for people displaced by hurricane sandy. if you have a problem, or been displaced because of the storms yes, there is place where you can go. we have a list of the shelters on our website at abc2news.com, go there for a list of the shelters in baltimore city, once again, you can hear the jones falls behind me here, overflowing, looking in to the business park area, flooding the parking lot for area businesses here. reporting live in hamden, she cher, abc2 news. -- sherrie johnson, abc2 news. flooding in this backyard. this photograph coming from windsor mill, you are our eyes

and ears, send them in to pix@abc2news.com. early voting is canceled because of the storm. the governor hopes the days can be made up later tuesday, is election day and a week away. >> breaking news this morning out of new york, 50 homes have been destroyed by a fire in queens. it happened while you were sleeping. jim describes this incredible scene. >> community of 4200 homes out heres this is a community that lost the most people during 9/11, firefighters and cops during 9/11, the community was hit horribly tonight. 6:30, they lost power. the water came rushing in. many here expected that there would be flooding and loss of power. the fire erupted on one of the walks out here and went from

walk to walk to walk. the fire was right across from us. as the fire just spread, we evacuated not once, we waded our way to another home and realized the parking lot we were next to, the cars started to blow up in that parking lot. we had to leave there and went to another home. the fire continued to spread. my understanding it has spread acrossed 12 blocks of breezy point, an area they call the wedge. it's a place i'm familiar with. i spent summers down here, it's destroyed tonight. now, we are in a church, there is about 40 of us that are, as we speaks about to be evacuated and taken out of here on because. there is no option to stay. there are tons of firefighters here, trying to put the blaze out. the fire is still going. we thought we were going to come here and see people that didn't want to leave. now they are forced to leave,

not by water, not by flood, not by sandy, but by fire. tonight, what we have seen is absolutely devastating. people here, are amazing people, they are people with a lot of pride to them. they are keeping their pride tonight and going the people i have spoken to said they are going to rebuild and some how, they will get through this. that was jim with us. that was a street side view of what we saw, 50 homes in the breezy point neighborhood of queens, 170 firefighters on the scene, want to give you a different look at this. this is a wideout shot. dee see the depth and the -- you can see the depth and the length of this. this is so big. he said no one was allowed to stay in the community. mandatory evacuations he was filing that report from a church where a number of people

were told to get out. see the firefighters on the scene, 170 strong. this is a tight knit community. this is a heart breaking story out of new york. one you have not heard the last of. this is a story we hear about, if not through the rest of the day today, days to come. >> so many stories coming out of new york and here in our community. >> you worry about your safety and property and whether you are going to lose power or not. all a concern with sandy and hundreds of thousands are in the dark. what bge is saying about getting the power back on for you. sandy shuts down route 50 in ocean city and other roads are shut down in baltimore. i will have the details coming up on good morning maryland.

we are following sandy. this proves to be a deadly storm, two deaths in the state of maryland, 883 nationwide. >> breaking news out of the state of new jersey, the garden states, you will remember with your coverage yesterday for you, ahead of sandy, so much attention paid to atlantic city, in and around the areas we have news, a dam has been breeched near the community, near the county. ho hoboken would be a good landmark. a thousand plus homes expected to be affected by this. >> closer to home, when you think about a storm, you worry

about your safety and property. that includes power outages. the latest situation from bge, under 200,000 people are without power, they restored power to over 77,000, that is something to keep in mind. should you lose power, that's a possibility today. we will pass along a number to you, we are told time and time again from the folks from bge, don't assume they know you lost power. 877-778-2222. they have brought in 3000 workers from out of state to help with this and help get the power restored. they have restored power to over 77,000 people. >> talking about the power outages, we are down to 198,000 now. they were at 217,000 outages

and it dropped down to 212. bge made a pledge to customers, they were not going to allow what happened then, to happen again. 750,000 people left in the dark back in july. you had the heat of the summer there. you remember that of course. not to give credit or overdue the credit right now, it appears bge is making good on their promise. >> one thing that happened with the storm that we didn't have in june, was warnings. our meteorologist told us this is going to happen, it's going be bad. we don't know how bad. that allowed bge to have a plan in place and prepare for something like that. >> lynette charles is here with us now with more on the storm, going ahead of this. moving forward, you're tired, it's been a long number of days for you. you have been hard at this with the guys. give us good news. >> it will wind down in the seven-day forecast. today, i know you want the good

news today. i can't give that to you, we have rain. i don't want to give people a false sense of security. we have rain and winds whipping around. >> it's not going to be as bad as yesterday. if you were worried about flooding or have been flooded, the last thing you want to see is rain. >> we are getting snow, i will talk about the rain in a second. look at how much snow is already falling across the area. see the blues. look how far it extends in. western maryland, some wet snow flakes could get as far as carroll county. i'm not going to rule that out at all. western maryland also west virginia, two to three feet of snowfall across the area. we look at here closer to home, and we see the yellows, we are looking at the oranges this is heavier pockets of rain coming down along i-70, walkersville, frederick,thermont, seeing rain

now going to continue throughout the day and also it's going to be heavy at times, we will see lulls, meaning that maybe just steady rain but not as heavy as we are seeing right now. rainfall totals, this is from yesterday, we have received close to of 6 inches in columbia, cordova, 5 inches. almost five in westminster. clarksville, we will pile on rain for today. this is already what we have had in bel air, over an inch of rain, close to an inch in sykesville. columbia an inch of rain. an inch in annapolis, over an inch in centerville. you are getting the feeling of what is going to be happening as we go throughout the day. we have the winds, going to be whipping around k tropical storm forced winds gusting up to that and the rainy conditions for today. stay in the you can and let the storm bass bivment tomorrows it -- pass, by tomorrow it will be better.

good morning, all of the rain is causing many roads to flood, a lot of intersections will be shut down, baltimore city, falls road is closed at lake avenue and going to be shutdown at old pimlico road. problems in baltimore county, storm damage now on park heights avenue at hooks lane and up in phoenix. jeretsville pike is shut down at paper mill road. something to keep in minds. the roads are extremely treacherous. if you don't have to go out, don't. stay at home. if you are using the main lines, here is the beltway, towson, delaney valley road. the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour, if you are planning to head out in the mess, all this rain, definitely keep that in mind. here is a look at 95, white marsh, route 43, people are playing it safe here in this region. not many cars out there. the roads are slick. avoid them if you can. meagan and charlie, over to you. the governor, mayor, police, are all saying the same
